Art and Design at St Benedict’s

Intent

Our St Benedict’s curriculum is designed with the intent to maximise the potential of all our
pupils; intellectually, socially, morally, emotionally and culturally. We take every opportunity to encourage a love for learning within all our pupils, based around a resilience
for learning and achieving greatness. Most importantly we allow our children to learn in a safe and stimulating environment, where their views are valued.

At St Benedict’s RC Primary School our art and design curriculum is designed to engage,
inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to participate
in, experiment with, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Children will
be empowered to think creatively and critically. They will investigate and evaluate a wide
range of creative outcomes from the past and present to develop rigorous understanding of
the many disciplines within art, craft and design and how they shape our past and future.

Implementation

St Benedict’s RC Primary Schools Art and Design curriculum is built around essential
knowledge, understanding and key skills. These are broken into year group expectations
and show clear continuity and progress.

As a school and in accordance with the National Curriculum’s expectations, we aim to
ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, 3D form, painting and textiles/ collage.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Impact

Outcomes in sketch books evidence a broad and balanced Art and Design curriculum and
demonstrate the children’s acquisition of identified key skills. Children reflect on their
learning at the end of each Art and Design topic through a final piece.

Teachers complete subject tracking sheets to identify pupils’ progress with knowledge
acquisition during a specific topic and more broadly, curriculum expectations within their key stage.

Art and Design is taught discretely, linked where possible to another to another subject. Art
sketch books show a clear sequence of learning which is reviewed by the subject leader to
ensure coverage and progression within the subject.

The Art and Design lead and the Head teacher take responsibility for the monitoring of the
Art and Design curriculum and the standards achieved by the children.

This monitoring takes the form of:

  1. Lesson observations and feedback;
  2. Learning walks and pupil voice conversations;
  3. Planning scrutiny followed by support where necessary;
  4. Book scrutinies;
  5. Data analysis.
